Child Abuse and Neglect

  1. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds
  2. More than five children die every day as a result of child abuse.
  3. Approximately 80% of children that die from abuse are under the age of 4.
  4. It is estimated that 50-60% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded on death certificates.
  5. More than 90% of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.
  6. Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
  7. About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the cycle of abuse.
  8. About 80% of 21 year olds that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.
  9. The estimated annual cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States for 2008 is $124 billion.
  10. Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy.

  13. 36% of all women in prison were abused as children.
  14. Children who experience child abuse & neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crime.
  15. One-third to two-thirds of child maltreatment cases involve substance use to some degree.
  16. Children whose parent’s abuse alcohol and other drugs are three times more likely to be abused and more than four times more likely to be neglected than children from non-abusing families.
  17. As many as two-thirds of the people in treatment for drug abuse reported being abused or neglected as children.

Child Sexual Abuse

  1. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused by their 18th birthday. 
  2. The median age for reported sexual abuse is 9 years old.
  3. 1 in 5 children are solicited on internet.
  4. Only 1 in 10 children sexually abused actually report.
  5. Estimated 39 million survivors in America.
  6. 30-40% are abused by family members.
  7. 60% are abused by someone the family trusts.
  8. More than 90% of children who are sexually abused know their abusers.
  9. 40% are abused by older or larger children.
  10. 60% of teen first pregnancies are preceded by experiences of molestation, rape or attempted rape. 
  11. 70-80% of serial rapist report that they were sexually abused as youngsters.
  12. 70% of offenders have between 1-9 victims, 25% have 10-40 victims.
  13. Serial Child molesters may have as many as 400 victims in their lifetime.
